I’m a fashion design student specialising in womenswear who has recently finished my final collection at Kingston School of Art. The design process and research are crucial aspects of my creative practice. I value storytelling and consider it a key part of any project. I am passionate about creating my visual language and connecting the dots through research.
I think that storytelling is the heart of any design project. I put a lot of effort into weaving stories into my work, making a consistent visual style that connects throughout. This means doing thorough research and putting together a mix of influences and ideas in each piece. I am strongly interested in the final styling and creative direction of projects also. The process of bringing together the narrative excites me, and I find it rewarding to see a project come to life through its final presentation.
INSPIRATION
The project started with gathering inspiration from tales, the characters that stood out to me were the damsel and the knight. The process started by gathering images and relevant research. I like to merge historic imagery with modern-day influences. Playing with traditional characters of fairytales for example the Knight in Shining Armour, I drew comparisons to a modern-day boxer and began to merge the two ; I like to play with juxtapositions in my research.
The project was oriented towards the creation of stylised looks symbolising the vulnerability of the damsel in distress, juxtaposed with more defensive elements from the knight and the boxer, drawing inspiration from chainmail and boxing silhouettes. The collection embodies a fusion of resilience and elegance in each look, with allusions to "the beetle," stemming from childhood recollections of encountering stag beetles in the garden while playing with my sister.
DETAIL
The grit of the collection comes from the focus on chainmail. I wanted to specifically focus on re-creating typical chainmail and drew inspiration from a book on pop-topping. I created a mini collection of accessories that accompany each look.
